Ski Camp International Frequently Asked Questions

What experience is needed?
Willingness to try new things and the desire to make friends is needed. We also recommend regular aerobic exercise for at least a few weeks before coming to camp. Walking, jogging, swimming or riding a bike, are all good ways to increase fitness.

How will we meet your child at the airport and what should be the arrival day?
We will meet each child at the only door out of Austrian Customs at the Innsbruck Airport. We will have a large sign with the child´s name on it. The arrival and departure days are the first and last days of the camp. We will need a complete Itinerary for the child. Transportation from the Airport to the Camp Site will be done by van. The driving distance is about one hour and twenty minutes. We will make sure that your child will be picked up even if airline delays occur.

How are the campers supervised?
24 hour supervision is provided. The campers are supervised at all times on the mountain and during activities. The staff and camp director live in the same hotel to make sure that everyone is happy. Our ratio of staff to campers is at least 1 staff for every 8 campers. We do not allow drugs or alcohol with our minor campers. If required, parents will be contacted and campers may be sent home immediately without refund.

What is the average camper age and ski or snowboarding ability?
Everyone is welcome at our camp. The camper´s age is between 12 and 16. We have coaches for all abilities.

What is the snow like?
Our skiing and snowboarding area is a glacier which means that there is always lots of snow all year round. The snow can be harder in the early morning and then usually becomes very soft in the afternoon.

How much spending money is needed?
Only presents or snack money is needed.

Can ski equipment be rented or bought?
Ski or snowboarding equipment can be rented at the local shops. Please let us know ahead of time so we can give you an exact quote for that.

What are the sleeping arrangements?
We put campers of close age and same gender together in the rooms. We can accommodate friends of the same age and sex who want to room together.

Is a passport required?
A passport is required. For rules regarding International travel please visit: http://travel.state.gov/travel/travel_1744.html

Is there a curfew?
Campers are not allowed to leave their room after 9:00 PM.

What's the weather like?
Hintertux Glacier is mountain environment and the conditions can change from very hot and sunny to very cold and wet. The mountain can get fresh snow a couple of times over the summer.

What about beginners?
Beginners are encouraged to progress at their own pace with no pressure. The ski resort has everything from flats to steeps and the children with no previous experience will probably be comfortable on a Blue run after the camp. Of course this depends on them.

Can the child travel alone to camp?
Many young teens travel alone to summer camps. Parents can request "Unaccompanied Minor" service from all the airlines. They will make sure that your child stays in the care of the Airlines until the approved pickup person picks up the child at the other end. You would simply register Ski Camp International as the receiving party. The cost is minimal and some airlines do this for free. You can also request the same service for the return portion so that they stay with airline staff right from when we check them in on the departure day.

Medical Facilities?
For ski slope emergencies: Alpin5 - Paramedic Rescue Helicopter.
» The Paramedic rescue helicopter Alpin 5 is stationed approx. 1.25 miles from Tux to provide even faster and more secure emergency rescue. Emergency number: 0043-5287-8510
For other emergencies, the following medical facilities are available:
» Schwaz Hospital – Thirty Three miles from our Ski Camp location.
» Zillertal Sport Clinic – Six miles from our Ski Camp location.

Can the camp be cancelled due to lack of snow?
Our summer camp operates on an ancient glacier. Because we operate on a permanent snowfield we don´t need to rely heavily on any one season´s snowfall to run the camp. So no, the camp can not be cancelled due to the lack of snow in the summer.

How do children keep in touch with their family?
The families will be contacted at arrival because the child or trip leader is required to call within two hours of arrival using a calling card. In case of emergency immediate contact will be made with the child´s family but no news is good news in our book.

Medical and Insurance Coverage?
All participants are required to carry personal medical insurance. Check your carrier to be sure if coverage is in effect while on vacation. Medical or dental treatment will be accessed in a reasonable amount of time at the nearest facility. Payment for treatment or emergency transport is the responsibility of your insurance company or family.
